Re: Your oldest gun
I guess my oldest would be my 10.4mm Vetterli. If you look up the Vetterli you'll see that it has the distinction of being the first magazine fed rifle to be adopted by any major military force (ca1864ish). Mine actually predates that, and is the single shot version before they offered the tubular magazine. It is not the earliest rimfire, but the later centerfire version. Made in Torino Italy and carried by Spanish Mounted Border Patrol, my rifle was the European equivelent of the Sharps. I even have the bayonet and the cool sliding dust cover that completely covers the bolt. It would be worth a lot, except that American gun collectors are a snobbish lot. They'll pay top prices for old American weapons, but could care less about many early European guns. Odd.
Re: "Like a PEZ dispenser"
My sister asked me the same question. She wanted a hand gun. I told her to get a .38 smith revolver. I figured that was something she could handle and similar to the .22 she used to shoot. If she got excited with something like a glock there's no telling what might get shot. lol You cant beat a shot gun for home defense. When your awaken from a deep sleep from your door being kicked in, a shot gun is a good point and shoot gun. Something you can still hit something with fairly easy when your startled and your heart's racing. It's easy to be way off target with a hand gun when your panicked.
Re: Your oldest gun
I have an old gun in an obsolete caliber... family history says it was used by one of my mexican ancestors at the battle of the alamo. I'm told it's a 'tercero' or a 'tercerlo'.... something. Looks kinda like a baker musket. Then I have a carcano, I have no idea what year. It's really long, with a finely calibrated really long rear tang sight. I don't know what caliber it is, but I learned as a little kid that a bottle rocket stripped of it's stick, fits just perfectly. light it, close the breech, and time your trigger pull so that it looks like you're shooting an old black powder gun.... and a mauser.... just like everyone else who has ever heard of gun ownership. it's a yugo, 1943 on german tooling, but the german markings have been over-written with the yugo ones. all numbers match except the bolt, which is about as good as none of the numbers matching. It's my plinker.

And when is the gun safety course scheduled? YA know they one they absolutely have to attend~? While trying to teach my wife to shoot in my hand gun range I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting." & "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting." I gave her the gun ( 9mm semi auto). I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting." & "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting." Taught her to hold it where the safety was what it did and why I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting." & "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting." That a new shiny deadly fresh bullet chambered every time it fired - showed her - I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting." & "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting." coached through the point and shoot thing. I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting."& "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting." She closed her eyes tilted the gun up at the ceiling and fired it. Then ( there's more) She left her finger on the trigger (right fucking on it) and waved the gun across my chest asking what she should do now? How many times had I said: "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting?" Never give your chick your gun. They really, really need a class. Make sure hey get one.
Re: "Like a PEZ dispenser"
I asked today, what finally decided them on getting the shottie... My sister explained to me that the night before, their burglar alarm had gone off in the late hours, and woke them up. Perimeter alarm breached, they suddenly realized the folley of their false sense of security... A bad guy in the house, and the cops on their way (anywhere from fifteen minutes to four hours, depending on the cop's mood and how many donuts he had left to finish off)... My sister's husband had to try to clear their house, in PJ's with bare hands and a flashlight. The guy didn't even have a baseball bat or even some pepper spray. I guess that scared em pretty bad. Let me first explain a few points. This house, takes about ten minutes or more, to clear in any kind of secure fashion. They live in a seven thousand square foot, three story brand-new home, the kind of neighborhood where everybody's trying to keep up with the Jones's and all the wives are ex-supermodel high-maintenance and helpless, and husbands are often gone on business. The homes are full of jewelry and electronics and there's an escalade or a lexus in every bay of each person's respective four-car garages. Whether you're a rapist or a thief, it's pretty much your playground. They found a balcony doorway left open upstairs, in one of the many rooms they don't use. Obviously a home intrusion. Now to figure out, is the bad guy still here? or did the alarm scare him away? Turns out, the guy was scared away. Nobody to be found. I guess they decided that next time, it's a lot more reassuring to do your dark-hallway-exploring with a Remington 870 than a karate-chop hand.
